The Scoop on the GED

GED stands for General Education Development.  This is a series of tests for people who want to acquire a high school diploma.  By passing the GED test, the student gets a high school diploma from the Kansas Board of Regents.

Tests

The GED is comprised of five multiple choice tests and an essay test that can be taken all at one time or one at a time.  Testing must be completed within 90 days of starting.

  1. Writing Skills - This test includes questions that measure your ability to use standard written English clearly and effectively.  (35 questions - 75 minutes) and (Essay - 45 minutes).
  2. Social Studies - Questions are from United States history, economics, geography, political science, and behavioral science. (64 questions - 85 minutes).
  3. Science - Questions are from the areas of biology, earth science, chemistry and physics. (66 questions - 95 minutes).
  4. Understanding Literature and the Arts - Questions are based on passages from newspapers, magazines, literature, poetry, and drama.  This test requires you to demonstrate an understanding of what is read. (45 questions - 65 minutes).
  5. Mathematics - Questions cover arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.  This test can be passed if competent in arithmetic skills only. (56 questions - 90 minutes)

Who can take the GED?

To be eligible to take the GED tests you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and be a resident of the state of Kansas,
    or
  • Be 16 or 17 years old and obtain a Compulsory School Attendance Disclaimer from an official of the school district in which you live.

How much does it cost to take the GED?

The GED test will cost each student $68 to take.  Retakes are also $68.

Is free instruction available for qualified students?

Yes.  Instruction to prepare for the test is given to qualified students by the ABE Center at no cost to the student.  Practice tests are also available to qualified students for free.

Where do I take the exam?

Although instruction is given in Coffeyville, testing is completed at Independence Community College or Labette Community College in Parsons, Kansas.
