The Business and Computer department cares about students and strives to help each student reach their full potential.  This exciting program depends on responsibility and top quality work.

Individualized instruction in a pleasant classroom environment that emphasizes the computer skills needed in today’s technical workplace.  The program involves intensive, hands-on training with up-to-date computer applications used in many business environments.  This Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) training provides a foundation for graduates to join the workforce in entry-level positions as valuable assets to their employers and assures an employer that a student has obtained the skills, knowledge, and dedication to perform with excellence.

Specialty subject areas allow students to train for the career of their choice.  Students will learn job responsibility, time management, communication and positive interpersonal skills to help build successful careers.

To complete the Associate in Applied Science Degree, the program emphasis credit hours and the general education credit hours, which must be taken from the list approved by the General Education Committee, must total at least 64 credit hours. 

Associate in Applied Science Degree

Students completing a technical program may desire to seek the Associate in Applied Sciences Degree.  In addition to completing a technical program, this degree also requires the completion of 18 hours in general education as outlined below.  Certain courses within this degree may or may not transfer to baccalaureate degree granting institutions. The student must complete 64 semester hours with a grade point average of 2.00 (C) or above. There is a minimum cumulative general education requirement of 18 semester hours. A minimum number of semester credit hours will be required in each of the fields listed below. NOTE: No courses numbered below 100 apply.

I.  Communications (6 hours)

Description of Courses 

BCTC-145.  Accounting for Small Business (Practice Simulation) (240 Contact Hours).  8 Hours.  This course reinforces skills learned Introduction to Computerized Accounting Software.  Students will develop and maintain a simple set of books to strengthen learning. 

BCTC-184.  Basic Web Page Design (145 Contact Hours).  5 Hours.  This is an introductory course in Web Page Design.  The course will provide students with a strong understanding of web design principles in the planning, building and maintaining of web pages and a web site.  Students will design and create web pages using web page editing/publishing software and create and edit graphic images for web pages using image editing software.  Upon completion of course, students should be able to apply principles of good web page design and style.  Prerequisite:  Permission of the instructor.

BCTC-113.  Business Procedures I (135 Contact Hours).  5 Hours.  This course introduces a variety of units to provide the student with critical thinking skills in the area of accessing and managing information, and the transfer of learned concepts.  Several units will be covered, including computer literacy and telephone communications.  Human relations and job attitude skills are integrated in all units.  The math unit is designed to develop the basic math skills necessary to serve as the foundation for more advanced Business Math concepts.  Emphasis will be on learning to use the 10-key calculator to solve problems.  Use of facsimile machine, copier, and scanner will also be covered.  This course covers Windows operation, disk and file management, basic systems training and utilization using Microsoft Office software for office applications including Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook and integrated activities that are experienced in the work setting.  This course prepares student for testing to become Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certified in Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.  Class instruction may be on a group or individual basis. 

BCTC-123.  Business Procedures II (135 Contact Hours).  5 Hours.  This course introduces a variety of units to provide the student with critical thinking skills in the area of accessing and managing information, and the transfer of learned concepts.  A variety of units will be covered, including computer literacy, and telephone communications.  Human relations and job attitude skills are integrated in all units.  This course provides the opportunity to apply basic math skills to personal and business applications.  The use of the ten-key calculator for calculations will be covered.  Common mathematical computations relative to accounting and financial control are included in this course. 

BCTC-143.  Business Procedures III (135 Contact Hours).  5 Hours.  This course introduces a variety of units to provide the student with critical thinking skills in the area of accessing and managing information.  A variety of units will be covered, including records management and employability skills.  Human relations and job attitude skills are integrated in all units.  This course also provides instruction in basic language art skills and written communication.  Fundamentals of accounting are included in this course using the Microsoft Office Excel program.  The course offers an introduction to the accounting cycle, basic concepts in double entry bookkeeping and an examination of the make-up of the income statement and balance sheet financial statements. 

BCTC-173.  Business Procedures IV (135 Contact Hours).  5 Hours.  This course introduces a variety of units to provide the student with critical thinking skills in the area of accessing and managing information.  A variety of units will be covered, including records management and employability skills.  Human relations and job attitude skills are integrated in all units.  Students will be provided the opportunity to learn how to communicate effectively in the business world.  As a continuation to the foundations of developing sentences and paragraphs covered in Business Procedures III, student swill learn the appropriate approach to capture the message necessary for effective communication.

BCTC-130.  Computer Applications I (190 Contact Hours).  7 Hours.  This course is designed to provide students with an orientation to work processing concepts including hands-on applications and skill development.  Students will use Microsoft Word 2000 as the primary course software for exploration in word processing.  This course will prepare students for testing to become Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certified in Word.  Prerequisite:  Keyboarding or permission of instructor. 

BCTC-180.  Computer Applications II (190 Contact Hours).  7 Hours.  This course covers basic systems training and utilization using Microsoft Office software for office applications.  Software components include Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook and integrated activities that are experienced in the work setting.  Students will also be working in the Windows environment including Windows operation and disk and file management.  The course is designed to prepare students for testing to become Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certified in Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.  Prerequisite:  Keyboarding or permission of instructor. 

BCTC-190.  Computer Applications III (190 Contact Hours).  7 Hours.  This course covers basic systems training and utilization using Microsoft Office software for office applications.  Software components include Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook and integrated activities that are experienced in the work setting.  The course also includes working in the Windows environment including Windows operation and disk and file management.  The course is designed to prepare students for testing to become Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certified in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook. 

BCTC-200.  Computer Applications IV (190 Contact Hours).  7 Hours.  This course covers beginning and advanced software training and utilization of Microsoft Office Access software for office applications. Software components include beginning and expert Access, and integrated activities that are experienced in a work setting. This class will prepare students for testing at beginning and expert levels of certification in Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOS) in Access.

BCTC-270.  Desktop Publishing Software (190 Contact Hours).  7 Hours.  This course is designed to identify the concepts and applications of desktop publishing and develop competencies using powerful computer software as a desktop publishing tool. A variety of software packages will be examined.  Students will learn how to combine text and graphics to create professional quality documents.   

BCTC-275.  Document Layout & Design (90 Contact Hours).  3 Hours.  This course is the beginning level study of designing publication layouts.  Students will work with industry standard software in the application of basic design principles to the area of layout and design.  Students enrolling in this course are expected to have experience with computer systems. 

BCTC-155.  Introduction to Computerized Accounting Software.  (Computer Applications II, Quicken, Quick Books or Peach Tree) (320 Contact Hours).  11 Hours.  This course is designed to help students learn computerized accounting software as a tool to facilitate transaction recording, posting to ledgers, writing checks, preparing invoices, performing reconciliation and most importantly preparing the company financial statements. 

BCTC-260.  Legal Office Procedures (470 Contact Hours).  16 Hours.  This course provides an introduction to Legal Machine Transcription, Legal Terminology and completion of Law Office Simulations. 

BCTC-220. Medical Machine Transcriptions (45 Contact Hours).  2 Hours.  This course prepares a student to become a transcriptionist in medical offices, clinics, hospitals and other health facilities.  Through 60 prerecorded exercises students become familiar with the following areas of medical transcription:  history and physical reports, radiology, operations, pathology, discharge summaries and autopsies.  Prerequisite:  Medical Terminology I. 

BCTC-230.  Medical Office Procedures (380 Contact Hours).  13 Hours.  This course introduces students to Insurance Forms Preparation, ICD-9/CPT-4 Coding and completion of Medical Office Simulations. 

BCTC-255.  Medical Terminology I (45 Contact Hours).  3 Hours. This course serves as an adjunct to other medical courses for nurses, medical technologists, laboratory assistants and medically related professionals, including community-health workers and medical social workers.  It is useful to students in biology, health, anatomy, physiology, nursing and pre-med. 

BCTC-207.  On-the-Job Training (OJT or OJT Equivalent) (0-195 Contact Hours).  Up to 4 Hours.  Students demonstrating excellent attendance, attitude and mastery of core curriculum competencies may be considered for on-the- job training experience.  Through the cooperation of local businesses, students are given the opportunity to apply the skills required for their future career.  Class attendance is also required.
