The Coffeyville Red Ravens placed second at the NAQT sectional held on Jan. 20 at Cloud County in Concordia, Kan. The Ravens finished the tournament with a 7-2 record, second to only Redlands (8-1) who will receive an automatic bid to compete at NAQT nationals. Coffeyville could very well receive an invitation for the national tournament based on their performance. The National NAQT Tournament will be March 2-3 in Chicago.

Coffeyville started the sectional tournament with six straight wins. Coffeyville dispatched Garden City's "C" team 290 to -5 in the opening match of the day. As a side note, NAQT teams can lose points with incorrect responses.

Coffeyville then defeated the Cowley "B" team 190-0. Dodge City was the next opponent and the Ravens defeated the Conquistadors 260-75. Coffeyville then defeated the Redlands Community College "B" team 130-60 before defeating Cloud County 270-75. The Ravens then held off the Garden City "A" team 210-185 to cap off six straight match wins.

Coffeyville suffered their first loss of the day by dropping a match to the Redlands "A" team, 225-130. Coffeyville bounced back by defeating Johnson County 220-160 before facing the Redlands "A" team a second time in the sectional finals. Redlands defeated the Ravens 175-145 to claim the sectional championship.

“It was a long day for the team, but they kept focused and represented our college well, receiving several compliments from some of the other teams' coaches,” said Linda McFate, CCC's Phi Theta Kappa advisor.

Sophomore Karl Wittenburg was the fourth individual medalist at the sectional. Wittenburg answered 36 toss-up questions over nine matches and tallied 51.63 points per 20 toss-up questions heard. Sophomore Isaiah Evensvold was ninth individually with 19 toss-up questions answered over nine matches with an average of 24.84 points per 20 toss-ups.

Coffeyville's next tournament will be on Feb. 24 at the KCQB East Regional in Iola, Kan.
