J.D. Akard
Offensive Tackle (1949-1951)
After World War II, J.D. went to Tulsa University, in the summer of 1949,
to get a college education and play football. He came to Coffeyville in the
fall of 1949 to play football for the Ravens. After going through
pre-season practice and playing in only one game, he was injured and missed
the rest of the season. He was given a medical red shirt for the 1949
season. He played on two great teams in 1950 and 1951. He was selected
first team All-American Offensive Tackle in 1950.
He became close to Roy Misegades as he worked for him at the drive-in
across from the junior high. J.D. graduated from CJC at semester in 1952
and went to work for Mr. Bynum at Bynum’s Men's Wear, 904 Walnut, to get
enough money to go on to a four-year college. The rest is history as he
worked there for 50 years, closing out this fine clothing store in 1997.
J.D has been a strong supporter of the Red Ravens football program ever
since he played here. |
