Cliff Long
Coach (1949-1956)
Clifford Long came to Coffeyville College in 1936 from Edna. He played
football for two years for CJC before going to Baker University for two
years. There he met his wife, Kathryn, and received his Bachelor of Science
Degree.
He returned to Coffeyville to begin a successful career with the
Coffeyville Public School System. Prior to World War II, he taught at
Longfellow Elementary School and Roosevelt Junior High. He served in the
United States Army, retiring as Lieutenant-Colonel. Following the war, he
returned to Coffeyville College, serving as Assistant Football Coach for
three years with Demp Cannon and Dink Littrell. He assumed the head job in
1949 and coached the first National Championship team in 1956.
He later served as principal of Roosevelt Junior High and Assistant
Superintendent of Schools before going to Pittsburg State University in
1964. He held many administrative positions before retiring in 1984 as
Director of Continuing Education. Dr. Long holds a Master’s Degree from the
University of California and a Doctorate of Education Degree from the
University of Tulsa.
Before his illness, he was active in civic organizations and the First
United Methodist Church. Each year at the Red Raven Football Banquet, the
Clifford Long Scholarship is awarded to The Most Improved Sophomore Football
Player. Dr. and Mrs. Long also have endowed a scholarship with the CCC
Foundation.
Dr. and Mrs. Long are parents of three children: Celia, Kent and Kurt and
two grandchildren. |
