Bill Mace
Running Back (1946-1947)
The first selected first team All-American for the Coffeyville Red Ravens
was running back Bill Mace. He grew up in Coffeyville and graduated from
Field Kindley before the war. He was in the Navy during World War II.
After the war, he and a number of his high school classmates returned
home to play for the Red Ravens in 1946 and 1947. All of the junior
colleges were loaded with men like Bill that had been in the war and went
back to college on the G.I. Bill. They were older and very mature, so some
of the greatest junior college football was played during this time period.
After graduating from CJC, Bill went to Kansas University and became a
good player for the Jayhawks. He was married to his high school sweetheart,
Jackie Christian, while a student at KU.
When Bill finished at KU, he coached for a number of years before he got
into private business. He still lives in Overland Park, KS. |
