Ron Springs
Running Back (1975)
Ron had more impact on Coffeyville Community College football than any
single person over the past 50 years. In 1975, he and a group of young men
changed the Red Raven program into the great program it had been back in the
1960s when Bill Mills was head coach. Ron still holds many of the
individual Red Raven records. His 2,047 yards rushing, 6.1 average on 334
carries and his 23 touchdowns are at the top of the list. His great play
against number one ranked NEO helped the Ravens beat NEO 42-27; his 312
yards rushing against Independence and his final game in the Wool Bowl
against undefeated New Mexico Military with 44 carries will always be
remembered and talked about by Raven fans.
Ron finished his last three years of college at Ohio State where he was
all Big 10 two years in a row. His junior year he rushed for 1,266 yards in
the Big 10 Conference. Ron was a top candidate for the Heisman Trophy his
senior year. The Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the fifth round in 1979. He
played for the Cowboys from 1979 through 1985. In 1983, he was selected for
All-Pro Team as he was the leading receiver in the NFC. His last two years
in the NFL, 1986 and 1987, he played with Tampa Bay.
Ron is in private business, but finds time to see his son Shawn. Shawn
was an All-American for Ohio State and drafted third in the 1997 draft by
the Seattle Seahawks. He also finds time to do much charity work for youth
organizations across the country. Ron lives in Dallas with his wife,
Adrian, and two daughters. |
