Jamie
Sumner
Offensive Tackle (1992-93)
Jamie Sumner grew up
in Wichita, Kansas, and attended Wichita North High School. During his
high school career he was a three-year starter in football on the
offensive line and earned second team All City honors as a senior as well
as being voted a team captain.
Jamie came to
Coffeyville in the fall of 1992 and started every game his freshman year.
Jamie was part of an offensive line that paved the way for Brian Knuckles
to earn first team All American honors at running back. The 1992 team
finished second in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 7 wins and 4
losses. The Ravens played in the Tyler, Texas, Shrine Bowl vs. Tyler
Junior College to finish that season.
As a sophomore in
1993, Jamie was selected as team captain and as a pre-season All
American. Again, he started all 11 games at offensive tackle and, for a
second time, helped pave the way for Brian Knuckles to earn first team All
American running back honors. Jamie was voted first team All Jayhawk
Conference along with second team All American honors on the NJCAA and JC
Gridwire teams. His teammates and coaches again honored him when he
received the prestigious Pete Peltzer Award for best offensive lineman on
the Red Raven team. The team again finished second in the conference with
9 wins and 2 losses and finished the year by playing in the Dixie Rotary
Bowl in St. George, Utah, defeating Dixie Junior College, 60-36.
After leaving CCC,
Jamie attended Ohio State University where he was a 26 game starter at
left guard. During his two years at Ohio State, he played in the Pigskin
Classic, the Kickoff Classic, and two New Year’s Day bowl games at the
Florida Citrus Bowl. In 1995, Jamie was part of an offensive line that
helped Eddie George win the Heisman Trophy as the best player in college
football, and he played next to Orlando Pace who won the Lombardi and
Outland trophies.
After a brief
professional career with the New York Giants and St. Louis Rams, Jamie
returned to Ohio State University to finish his degree in sociology. He
graduated in 1999.
Jamie continues to
be an active participant in the Red Raven Football Lettermen’s Association
and has also helped with recruiting athletes to Coffeyville.
Jamie married his
CCC sweetheart, the former Julie Frazier. They were married in 1999 and
have a son, Austin James.
“I only spent two
years at Coffeyville, but gained a lifetime of memories and
relationships. The great respect I have for my teammates, coaches, and
teachers from CCC and the people of Coffeyville will always remain with
me.” |
