#20 Ravens fall to #2 Butler in defensive battleThe Coffeyville Red Ravens nearly pulled off an upset on the road at #2 Butler on Saturday night, but Butler scored two third quarter touchdowns and held off a late Coffeyville threat to hang on for a 20-13 win over the Red Ravens. Coffeyville got off to a great start against the Grizzlies. After receiving the game-opening kickoff, the Ravens marched down the field in their biggest sustained drive of the night. The Ravens started the drive on their own 27 yard line and with the help of a Nate Guillory 20 yard run and a Nick Hardesty to Bryant Williams 22 yard pass completion, the Ravens moved the ball to the Butler six yard line with around 11 minutes remaining in the first quarter. The drive stalled when Hardesty was sacked on a third and goal play, forcing the Ravens to settle for a 32 yard field goal from Lucas Ortiz. Butler would answer on their first possession, culminating a nine play, 64 yard drive with a 10 yard touchdown pass from Press Taylor to Sam Jacobson. Grady Fowler's extra point made it 7-3 Butler. The Ravens would take the lead late in the first quarter with the help of a huge special teams play. With Butler backed up on their own 19 yard line with just over two minutes remaining, the Ravens Dustin Moomau blocked the punt of Zac Stetler. The Ravens Tim Keeton recovered the ball on the Butler one yard line. Moomau would get his hand on a second punt later in the game on his great night on special teams play. The Ravens would take the lead on the next play when Dustin Lindsey scored on a one yard run and with Lucas Ortiz's extra point, the Ravens had a 10-7 lead with 1:44 left in the first quarter. On Butler's next possession, Taylor was intercepted on a second and ten play by Jamail Berry on the Coffeyville 49 yard line. Berry, who had two interceptions on the night, returned the ball 37 yards to the Butler 14 yard line. The Ravens got the ball to the 10 before Guillory was tackled for a six yard loss on third down and the Ravens settled for a 34 yard field goal from Ortiz with 14 minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Ravens almost expanded the lead to double digits midway through the second quarter and once again, Berry was involved in setting up great field position for the Ravens. Berry intercepted Taylor for the second time with 9:54 remaining in the second period. Berry returned the interception 25 yards to the Butler 11 yard line. After a penalty and a three yard loss on a rush, Lindsey ran for a five yard gain, setting up a third down and 13 play at the Butler 14. Hardesty connected with Lindsey on a pass completion, but Butler's J.D. Douglas forced a fumble which Douglas recovered on the Butler two yard line. Douglas would thwart another Coffeyville drive later in the half, intercepting Hardesty on the Butler 12, but Coffeyville's defense hung tough by forcing a Butler punt on one possession and later stopping the Grizzlies on downs to maintain a 13-7 lead going into halftime. Butler would score twice late in the third quarter, once on a Mike Garrison 10 yard touchdown completion to Cole Bachamp and the game-winning touchdown with 40 seconds remaining in the third quarter on a Beau Johnson 68 yard run. Fowler missed the second extra point opportunity, keeping the Ravens within seven at 20-13 heading into the fourth quarter. The Red Ravens would have one more golden opportunity on offense. With 3:41 remaining in the game, the Ravens forced a Tywon Hubbard fumble which was recovered by the Ravens' Kunle Kola on the Butler 32 yard line. However, Hardesty would be intercepted by Maurice Gray on the Butler 13 and Gray returned the ball to Butler 35 yard line to thwart the drive. The Ravens would later force a Butler punt and would get a final possession on their own seven yard line with just over a minute remaining in the game, but no last second miracles were in the offering for the Ravens. The game was a battle of defenses. Butler managed 256 yards on offense while the Ravens were held to 136 yards of total offense. Both teams had three turnovers. Nate Guillory was held to 44 yards on 22 carries and Hardesty completed 9-of-23 passes for 92 yards. Bryant Williams had three receptions for 40 yards, and Scott Donaldson and Jordan Daniels both had two catches. Jamail Berry had a big night defensively with two interceptions and 62 return yards. Berry also added four solo tackles, three assisted tackles and a fumble recovery. Garrick Maples had three solo tackles, seven assisted tackles, a QB hurry and a pass break up. Troy Epps continued his terrific season with a solo tackle, five assisted tackles, two tackles for loss (-10 yards) and two sacks (-14 yards). He also forced a fumble. Kunle Kola in addition to a fumble recovery had five assisted tackles and .5 tackle for loss and .5 sack. Dominique Roulack had four solo tackles, three assisted tackles and a forced fumble. Chris Donaldson had two solo tackles, three assisted tackles, two tackles for loss (-9 yards), .5 QB sack and a batted pass. Kevin Funches had four tackles and a pass break up. Kicker Lucas Ortiz was a perfect 2-for-2 in field goal attempt and made his only extra point attempt. Ortiz also punted 10 times for a 34.2 yard average. The Ravens fall to 3-3 overall and to 2-2 in conference play. The Ravens will be home the next two weeks, hosting Independence on October 13 and Garden City on October 20 during homecoming week. Both games will begin at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville. |
