Ravens bounce back with 26-6 win at HighlandA strong defensive effort, a solid rushing attack and the punt returns of Blair Irvin led to a 26-6 win for the Coffeyville Red Ravens over the Highland Scotties on Saturday afternoon in Highland, Kansas. The Red Ravens intercepted two passes including one returned 74 yards for a touchdown by Melvin Williams and the Red Raven defense held Highland to 223 yards of total offense. The score remained 0-0 until the Ravens broke the deadlock with one minute left in the second quarter. Dustin Lindsey scored on a 4-yard run, capping off a 13 play, 59 yard drive which absorbed just over six minutes of time. Eric Hronek missed the extra point after a motion penalty moved the ball back five yards, keeping the Ravens advantage at 6-0. Coffeyville nearly extended the lead on the final play of the second quarter. After the Ravens defense forced a Highland punt with 1.3 seconds left in the game, Raven returner Blair Irvin returned the punt 81 yards. Just before breaking into the end zone, Irvin was pulled down on the Scotties one yard line with no time remaining in the half. Until the Ravens first touchdown of the game, both teams had missed opportunities to score in the first quarter. The Ravens had the first possession of the game and drove to the Highland 18 yard line until a fumble recovered by the Scotties thwarted the drive. Highland had a chance to score on their first possession, but a 49 yard field goal attempt by Craig Wissler hit the upright. Coffeyville would pull away in the third quarter. The Ravens made it 12-0 on their first possession of the second half. Nate Guillory capped off an 11 play, 62 yard drive with a 2 yard touchdown run to make it 12-0 Ravens. Hronek missed a second extra point attempt after another penalty pushed the attempt back five yards. The Ravens would force the Scotties to punt on the next possession and Irvin would once again break off a big return. This time, Irvin returned the punt 39 yards to give the Ravens possession at the Highland 31 yard line. It would take just five plays and 1:22 for the Ravens to extend the lead. Guillory ran seven yards behind the blocking of full back Todd Cheek for a touchdown to cap off the short drive. Lucas Ortiz connected on the extra point, giving the Ravens a 19-0 lead. Coffeyville's defense would get involved in the scoring early in the fourth quarter. With 12:59 remaining in the game, Melvin Williams intercepted a Highland pass and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown. Ortiz's extra point extended the lead to 26-0. Highland would tack on a late touchdown, a three yard scoring pass from Sean Connolly to Terence Hall with seven seconds left in the game. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the final tally at 26-6 Ravens. Guillory ran for 133 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns for the Ravens. Lindsey added 61 yards on 15 carries. Quincy Watie came off the bench for four carries and 17 yards and quarterback Dustin Moomau added 15 yards on five carries. Moomau also completed 2-of-6 passes for 23 yards. Tell Wyrick had one reception for 16 yards and Ryan Specht had one catch for seven yards. Irvin had six punt returns for 140 yards and he also recorded an interception. Lucas Ortiz was 2-for-2 on extra point attempts and he also punted the ball five times for an average of 41.4 yards, including three kicks inside the 20. For Highland, Vincent Gay completed 12-of-19 passes for 91 yards and an interception and Connolly completed 11-of-13 passes for 91 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Douglas White caught eight passes for 81 yards and Hall added eight receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown. Hall also rushed 15 times for 30 yards and Connolly ran nine times for 23 additional yards. Defensive stats show Ade' Manga as the leading tackler with three solo tackles and 11 assisted tackles. Dominique Roulack recorded 10 tackles, four solo and six assisted and 2.5 tackles for loss. Larry Ford had seven tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss for 26 yards. Melvin Williams, in addition to his interception for a touchdown, recorded seven tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Troy Epps had seven tackles and 2 tackles for loss for nine yards. Ford and Ray Davis each recorded a full sack. The Ravens were credited with four sacks on the afternoon. The Ravens, 1-0 in KJCCC play and 1-1 overall, will open up an extended home stand beginning on September 8. The Ravens will entertain the Fort Scott Greyhounds. Kick off is at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville. |
