Ravens hold on to defeat Hutchinson, 20-13

The reports of the Red Ravens death have been greatly exaggerated.  Nate Guillory rushed for 208 yards and two touchdowns and another stellar defensive effort propelled the Ravens to a 20-13 win over Hutchinson in a pivotal Jayhawk Conference game on September 15 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville.  The win improves the Ravens to 2-1 in conference play and vaults the Ravens into second place in the KJCCC.  The Ravens are 2-2 overall.

Coffeyville struck first early in the first quarter, aided by great field position.  After a quick-kick punt by quarterback Dustin Moomau had pinned the Blue Dragons offense to the one yard line, the Ravens defense forced the Blue Dragons into a three-and-out possession.  Coffeyville started their scoring drive on the Hutchinson 29 yard line.  Guillory opened the drive with a five-yard run and the Blue Dragons helped the Ravens out further with a face mask penalty, which moved the ball to the Hutchinson 12 yard line.  Two plays later, Guillory found a opening and scored on a nine yard rushing play, giving Coffeyville a 7-0 lead after a successful Lucas Ortiz extra point.

Coffeyville would expand the lead early in the second quarter when Guillory broke loose for a 69 yard touchdown run with 12:54 left in the quarter.  Ortiz's extra point attempt missed, keeping the lead at 13-0. Hutchinson would answer with a scoring drive of their own late in the second quarter.  Blue Dragons' quarterback Skylar Travis found Lane Hensley for a 15 yard scoring strike with 2:30 left in the half.  The extra point attempt failed.

The Ravens had a chance to tack on to the lead just before halftime.  The Ravens' Sheirdeill Breathett recovered a Kevin Crow fumble on the Hutchinson 17 yard line with 32 second remaining in the half.  The Ravens moved the ball to the Hutchinson 10, but Moomau was sacked on a third-and-three play, forcing a field goal attempt from 37 yards out with three seconds left.  The field goal missed wide left, leaving Ravens' halftime lead at 13-6.

The Ravens would open up their biggest lead of the game with 9:44 left in the third quarter when Landon Murrell, a Raven wide receiver, found an opening for a 32 yard rushing touchdown.  Ortiz's extra point gave Coffeyville a 20-6 advantage.  Big plays leading to the touchdown run included a 26 yard Guillory rush and a 17 yard Moomau rush that included a five yard face mask penalty at the end of the run.

Hutchinson would get back into the game with a little help from the Ravens.  After a Blue Dragons punt had pinned the Ravens offense to their own one yard line with 7:17 left in the third quarter, the Ravens would commit a costly turnover on a third-and-six play from their own five.  The Blue Dragons' Reggie Haynes intercepted a Moomau pass at the Coffeyville 15 yard line and Haynes returned the ball to the two yard line.  Damien Bates would run for a two yard touchdown on the next play, cutting the Ravens lead to 20-13 after T.J. Hipshar's extra point was good.

Neither team would score again.

For the game, the Ravens had 296 yards of total offense and the Ravens defense held Hutchinson to just 137 yards of total offense.  The Ravens rushed for 272 yards on the game.  In addition to Guillory's 208 yards rushing, Murrell had 32 yards on one carry and Dustin Lindsey rushed for 22 yards on nine carries.  Reserve quarterback Nick Hardesty had the lone completion on the night, a 24 yard strike to Jordan Daniels.

Defensively, Ade' Manga had five solo tackles and five assisted tackles.  Dominique Roulack recorded four solo tackles and five assisted tackles and Melvin Williams had four solo tackles, four assisted tackles and an interception to ice the game with about one minute left in the game.  Kunle Kola had one solo tackle, six assisted tackles, and one sack for 16 yards.  Dwight Tenpenny had two sacks for 13 yards, including a big sack late in the fourth quarter.

The Ravens will be back in action on September 22 when they host Air Force Prep.  Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.  The Ravens will enjoy a bye week September 29 before traveling to El Dorado to face the Butler Grizzlies on October 6.
