Ravens playoff bound with win over Indy

It wasn't the prettiest of wins, but Saturday night's 21-14 victory over Independence was enough to ensure a playoff berth for the Coffeyville Red Ravens.  The Ravens, 3-2 in conference play, will be guaranteed at least a fourth seed in the Region 6 playoffs which begin in three weeks.

Independence received the game opening kickoff, but their first drive stalled after three plays.  Payden Shaw's punt went for only 24 yards into a stiff breeze, giving the Ravens great field position on the Pirate 46 yard line.  The Ravens would take advantage.  Nate Guillory capped off a four play, 46 yard drive with a 15 yard touchdown run with 13:15 remaining in the first quarter.  Lucas Ortiz's extra point gave the Ravens a 7-0 lead.

The lead would expand to 14-0 with 5:38 remaining in the second quarter.  Todd Cheek scored on a two yard run and Ortiz's extra point made it 14-0 Coffeyville.  Cheek's touchdown was the only points tallied into the wind on the evening.  The five play, 43 yard drive into the wind featured a beautiful over the shoulder catch from Bryant Williams on a Nick Hardesty pass that went for 27 yards and putting the Ravens' offense into the red zone.

The Pirates, though, would not go away without a fight.  The Pirates Demetrious Warmble gave Independence great field position to the Coffeyville 44 with a 39 yard kickoff return.  Three plays later, Pirates quarterback Jeff Schibi would hit Andre Simmons on a 29 yard scoring strike.  Josh Wheatley's extra point cut the Ravens' lead to 14-7.

The Pirates defense would force the Ravens into a three-and-out on Coffeyville's next possession, and the Pirates would strike once again and once again, the Simmons from Schibi connection would provide the points.  Schibi hit Simmons with a seven yard touchdown pass with 23 seconds remaining in the half and Wheatley's extra point would knot the score at 14-14.

Coffeyville, though, would retake the lead midway through the third quarter on a short scoring drive aided by a huge Coffeyville defensive play.  With 7:34 left in the quarter, Coffeyville's Troy Epps recovered a fumble by the Pirates' Schibi on the Pirates eight yard line and Coffeyville scored on the next play when A.J. Evans found the end zone.  Ortiz's extra point made it 21-14 Coffeyville and the Ravens defense would make it stand the rest of the evening.

Epps had another huge defensive game, finishing the night with four sacks for -40 yards, three QB hurries, and a fumble recovery.  Dominique Roulack had four solo tackles, nine assisted tackles and a QB hurry.  Ade' Manga had six solo tackles, four assisted tackles and two QB hurries. Chris Donaldson had a QB sack, three QB hurries and a forced fumble.  Larry Ford added three solo tackles, three assisted tackles, a QB sack, a QB hurry and a forced fumble.  Coffeyville native Ray Davis had an interception with a 38 yard return.

The Ravens' defense held Independence to 115 yards of total offense on the game, 101 passing and 14 rushing.

Nate Guillory led the Ravens offense with 123 yards rushing on 26 carries and a touchdown.  A.J. Evans ran for 30 yards on nine carries and a touchdown and Todd Cheek added a touchdown for the Ravens.

Nick Hardesty completed 8-of-14 passes for 70 yards.  Bryant Williams caught three passes for 40 yards and Brandon McCoy caught three balls for 20 yards.

Blair Irvin had two punt returns for 73 yard for the Ravens.

Independence got 101 yards passing from Jeff Schibi and two touchdowns and Andre Simmons caught six passes for 53 yards and two touchdowns.  Ryan Farrow was the Pirate leading rusher with 47 yards.

The Ravens, 4-3 overall, return to action next Saturday, October 20, when they host Garden City at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.  Saturday night's game will also be homecoming for Coffeyville.  Garden City will enter 4-1 in conference play and 6-1 overall.  A Ravens' win over Garden City will give Coffeyville a slim chance of hosting a first round playoff game during the Region 6 playoffs.  A Ravens' loss will give Coffeyville the fourth seed in the playoffs and a probable trip to El Dorado to face Butler.
