McElroy hits hole-in-one at Hillcrest Golf Course

Posted September 1, 2009

Forgive Coffeyville Community College golfer Dwight McElroy for not embellishing upon his story about the hole-in-one he hit at Hillcrest Golf Course last week during a practice round.  In future decades, the magical shot will be remembered as a high, majestic arching shot that found nothing but the bottom of the cup.  For now, well, please remember that McElroy is a young, college freshman.

“I turned my back on it, actually,” said McElroy, a Neodesha, Kansas, native.  “It was going right at the pin, but I thought it was going be like most shots – just a little short.  Then everyone in my group started whooping and hollering.  I didn’t believe them at first.”

McElroy’s first career hole-in-one was accomplished on the sixth hole from the back tees, approximately 201 yards in length on this day.  McElroy used a hybrid two wood with 17 degrees loft.  The ball was a Maxfli borrowed from a teammate.

The shot was witnessed by fellow Coffeyville Community College golfers Kolbee McKee, Kye Hoisington, and Tanner Crawford.  Brandon Logan was also a witness to the shot.

“It looked short, but it took one hop and bounced in,” said Crawford, who actually did see the ball go into the hole.

As for the tradition of buying witnesses a beverage in celebration of a hole-in-one, McElroy has issued IOUs.  For one witness, though, he wants more than a soda.

“I want one million dollars,” said Crawford, a freshman from Ozawkie, Kansas.  “It can be cash or direct deposit.”

It might take awhile to collect on that request.
