LaForge Places Ninth at Jayhawk Championship, Team Fifth

Caney, Kansas sophomore Gable LaForge placed ninth out of 50 golfers at the Jayhawk Conference Championship Tournament played on Monday and Tuesday at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas. LaForge shot an opening round 78, then fired back-to-back rounds of 76 to finish the 54 hole tournament with a 14-over-par 230.

As a team, Coffeyville Community College placed fifth, finishing one stroke ahead of sixth place Kansas City. That one stroke was critical in determining the season standings for Coffeyville. Coffeyville received six points for their fifth place finish and Kansas City got five for placing sixth. The two teams went into the tournament tied for fourth place in the league standings, so by virtue of one stroke, the Ravens get to claim fourth place uncontested.

Dodge City won the Jayhawk Conference Championship Tournament and also claimed the league championship. Dodge City won by 30 strokes over Johnson County and by 39 strokes over Hutchinson. Hutchinson, though, finishes second in the league standings with Johnson County third overall in the league standings. Mariano Rossi of Dodge City won the individual title, shooting a one-under-par 215 for the three rounds. Teammate Alex Tiong was a stroke behind with an even-par 216.

In addition to LaForge, competing for Coffeyville at the Jayhawk Championship Tournament were Brandon Winfrey, Ryan Scott, Will Wilson and Matt Schmidt.

The Ravens will play at the Men's District III Championship Tournament on April 30 and May 1 at Sand Creek Station in Newton. The district tournament is a qualifier for the NJCAA National Golf Championships coming up in mid-May.
