Region 6 Champs!Independence-Coffeyville Boxscore Boo Richardson scored 17 points and Anthony Slack had a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds as the Red Ravens clinched their fourth Region 6 title in five years with a 66-57 win over Independence in the Region 6 Championship game at Wichita. The Ravens will represent Region 6 at the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament to be held in Hutchinson March 21-25. The Ravens, 30-4, will face Arizona Western, 27-5, in the first round the national tournament at 8:30 p.m. The national tournament will be held at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The Ravens led 35-22 at the half, powered Barry Eberhardt who scored nine points from off the bench. The Ravens actually trailed 15-12 at the 10:28 mark in the first half, but finished the half on a 23-7 run that Independence was never able to overcome. The Ravens led by as many as 15 in the second half, 50-35 with 11:01 remaining in the game. Independence chipped away at the lead, cutting it to seven, 61-54, with 2:10 remaining. Independence would get no closer the rest of way as Boo Richardson made 3-of-4 free throws and Isaiah Allen was 2-of-2 from the charity stripe down the stretch. Eberhardt and Allen with 11 and 10 points respectively joined Richardson and Slack in double-figures. The Ravens shot 38% from the field on the game, but the Ravens defense was once again stellar. The Ravens held Independence to just 35% shooting from the floor and forced the Pirates into 18 turnovers. Slack also recorded six block shots including four during a one minute frenzy late in the second half. The Ravens also held a big advantage at the free throw line, converting 19-of-30 attempts while the Pirates managed to make just 7-of-16. Boo Richardson was named Region 6 tournament MVP and Barry Eberhardt and Anthony Slack were both named to the all-tournament team. Overall, heading into the 2006 national tournament, the Ravens are a cumulative 153-28 (.845 winning percentage) the last five seasons. More impressively, the Ravens are 80-10 in regular season conference play (.889 winning percentage) and 18-1 (.947) in Region 6 tournament play. |
