Over $11,000 raised at benefit bull riding

Coffeyville Community College (CCC) sponsored the Hookin’ For Help II Benefit Bull Riding and Live Auction on August 2.  The event drew nearly 500 spectators and bull riding fans to the Coffeyville, Kan. Fairgrounds.  Visitors enjoyed a concert by Tyler King of Wann, Okla. and placed their bids on a number of silent auction items before the live auction and bull riding started.  Jesse Schellhammer of Ford, Kan. stayed on for 8 seconds to win the nearly $1,500 bull riding prize.  Red Raven Alumni, Casey Thomison won the two-year old bull futurity and took home $1,900.  The biggest success of the night was the fundraising of over $11,000 for CCC cowboy, Cody Stephens.

Stephens has been bull riding and rodeoing his entire life and last spring he was well on his way to a national collegiate rodeo finals bid as a member of the CCC Rodeo Team.  In April, 2009 he fell ill and was diagnosed a few days later with Leukemia.  He has spent the last five months in and out of hospitals with four more months to go.  As of August 2009, his prognosis is a positive one, however the ordeal has left a mountain of medical bills even after insurance.  The Hookin’ For Help II allowed fellow cowboys and rodeo fans a chance to help bring back one of their own.

Stephens was in the arena on August 2 judging the bull futurity and helping where he could.  Donations can be made to the Cody Stephens Medical Fund at any Bank of America.
