CCC Academic Challenge team places third at regional meetThe Coffeyville Community College Academic Challenge team placed third at the regional meet this past weekend. The Ravens went 4-2 at the regional meet held in Wamego, Kansas, and hosted by Highland Community College. The Ravens opened the meet by defeating Allen County 175-80. The Ravens then dropped back to back matches to Neosho County and Johnson County. Neosho County won the meet with Johnson County placing second. The Ravens rebounded to win their final three matches on the day. The Ravens defeated Cloud County 140-105, Highland 200-35, and Kansas City 105-90. Individually, Zach Robertson, a freshman from Bland, Missouri, was the third high scorer at the meet. Robertson answered 26 toss-up questions over six games. Tyro, Kansas, freshman Samantha Henry was thirteenth individually at the meet, answering an average of 1.6 toss up questions per game. Also competing for the Ravens were freshmen Chance Harmon of Caney, David Staton of Cherryvale, and Jeramiah Black of Salina, Oklahoma. Academic Challenge is a quiz bowl competition played by a majority of the community colleges in Kansas. Competitors must be enrolled in at least six hours for the college they represent and have less than 72 total hours in their academic career. Questions are similar to those found on the TV game show Jeopardy and categories are those found in the general education curriculum at the state community colleges. Sponsors for CCC are Physics Instructor Ryan Willis and Information Specialist Chuck Reed. The Ravens will compete next at the Academic Challenge State Tournament to be held April 25-26 in Colby, Kansas. |
