Teushcer and Cannon take first at Cowley Invitational; women's 4 x 100 meter relay team qualifies for nationalsTwo Red Raven athletes took first place in their respective events at the Cowley Invitational on March 29 in Arkansas City, Kansas. Septembra Teuscher placed first in the women's javelin and Rashad Cannon took first in the men's long jump. Teuscher, a freshman from Paola, Kansas, threw the javelin 126' 10" to win first by over ten feet. Cannon won the long jump by three inches, posting a distance of 24' 5.50". Cannon, a freshman from Richmond, Virginia, was an All-American in the long jump during the indoor season. The women's 4 x 100 meter relay team of Robinson, Mask, Brandy Simpson, and Tarayla Merriweather placed second with a time 49.02 seconds. The time was good enough to qualify the relay team for the national meet in May. The Ravens had some other notable performances at the Cowley Invitational. Gabby Mask placed fifth in the women's 100 meter dash with a time of 13.03 seconds. Demica Robinson finished sixth in the women's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.83. Three women placed in the long jump. Simpson was sixth with a jump of 17' 4". Mask was seventh with a jump of 16' 11.50" and Merriweather was eighth with a 16' 8.75" effort. Merriweather also placed in the triple jump, finishing fifth with a distance of 35' 10". Other notable men performances included Ramon Harris who placed eighth in the men's 100 meter dash. Harris finished with a time of 11.33 seconds. Harris was also seventh in the 200 meter dash, completing the race in 22.32 seconds. West Elk freshman Tell Wyrick placed in three throwing events. Wyrick was third in the shot put (43' 5.25"), second in the discus (142' 2"), and seventh in the hammer throw (117'). Jarve Dean was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 41' 7.25". "Considering what we were able to achieve on a rather ugly day weather-wise, we can’t wait to see what types of performances our athletes will turn in under more tolerable weather conditions," said assistant coach Heather Schmidt. The Ravens are back in action when they host the Dean Pryor Invitational on Saturday, April 5, at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
