Men and women track teams both finish 8th at indoor region meet

The Red Raven track teams competed at the Region 6 Indoor Championships on Feb. 23-24 and both the men and women placed eighth in their respective divisions.  The women's team compiled a total of 22 points during the meet.  Women athletes winning points for the Red Ravens included:

  • Gabby Mask, two points in the 60 meter dash for placing seventh with a time of 7.96 seconds.  Mask also picked up three points in the long jump with her sixth place finish.  Mask had a jump of 17-01.50 feet.
  • Demica Robinson, one point in the 60 meter dash for placing eighth with a time of 8.16 seconds.  Robinson also picked up two points in the 200 meter dash for placing seventh with a time of 26.63 seconds.
  • Tarayla Merriweather placed eighth in the long jump to gain one point and sixth in the triple jump to gain three points.  Merriweather's long jump was 16-7.25 feet and her triple jump was for a distance of 35-03.25 feet.
  • Brandy Simpson placed third in the pentathlon with 2,701 event points.  By placing third, she earned the Ravens six team points.  Simpson also finished eighth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.81 seconds, good for one point.
  • The women's 4 x 400 meter relay team of Robinson, Simpson, Mask, and Christen Hill tallied three points with a sixth place finish (4:40.57).

The Raven men earned 21 team points at the indoor region meet.  Men gaining points for the Ravens included:

  • Rashad Cannon won the long jump, earning ten points for the Ravens, with a leap of 24-03.00 feet.
  • Dustin Schull placed sixth in the pentathlon with 2,904 event points, earning three team points for the Ravens.
  • DJ Bland placed seventh in the pentathlon with 2,803 event points, gaining two team points.
  • Ramon Harris placed eighth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.40 seconds, earning one point.
  • The 4 x 400 meter relay team and 4 x 800 meter relay team both placed eighth in their respective events, earning one point for each event.  The Ravens finished the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3:28.94 and the 4 x 800 meter relay in 8:25.78.  The Ravens also gained three points by placing sixth in the distance medley with a time of 11:17.07.  The 4 x 400 meter relay team consists of Harris, Bland, Chris Gravley, and Geoffrey Sygay.  The 4 x 800 meter relay team consists of Seth Freeman, Gravley, Isaiah Sack and Schull.

In the Eastern Conference standings, the Raven women placed third and the men fourth.

"This regional meet is a team competition and our athletes put forth great efforts," said Coffeyville assistant track coach Heather Schmidt.  "Even though most people were competing in more events than usual, everyone pushed through and really stepped up for the team."

Following the indoor national meet on March 7-8 in Charleston, Ill., the Ravens will begin the outdoor season on March 13 at the Southwestern Invitational in Winfield, Kansas.  The Ravens will once again host the Dean Pryor Invitational.  This year's Dean Pryor meet will be held April 5 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
