“Raissa is a type of player that you never want to see go,” said CCC head coach Delice Downing.  “She never brings a bad attitude to the court, she just loves the game of volleyball.”

Glover, a sophomore from Lawrence, Kansas, made honorable mention as a libero.  Glover also saw significant time this year as a setter.  Glover led the Ravens this past season with 493 digs, averaging four digs per set.  She also had 224 assists and 45 serving aces.

“Alyx has been a leader for us since her freshman year and she will go on to the next level,” said Downing.  “Alyx is a type of player that is so hard to replace and she has been a role model that our freshmen have looked up to.”

The Ravens finished the season with a 24-13 overall record and were a qualifier for the district tournament.

Ravens fall to Cowley in District M tourney

The Red Raven volleyball team ended their season on Nov. 7 with a loss to Cowley in the District M Tournament in Arkansas City, Kan.  The Ravens fell 25-16, 25-18, and 25-14.  Coffeyville entered the match as the eighth seed in the tournament while Cowley had the top seed.  Cowley eventually won the district tournament and qualified for the national tournament.

“We came out scared,” said Downing.  “We looked like deer in head lights.”

The tandem of Chelsea Childs and Raissa Santos paced the Ravens offensively.  Childs had a team-high nine kills in the match while Santos recorded seven kills. GraShawna Briscoe added five kills.  Sophomore libero Alyx Glover had a match-high 15 digs.  Freshman setter Amber Blount dished out 23 assists and Childs was credited with a team-high three solo blocks.

“I can not be happier for the group of young ladies that wore a Red Raven uniform all season long,” said Downing.  “If we came into the region tournament somewhere other than eighth, we would have been in the district final and then who knew what would have happened.”

The Ravens had to battle for the eighth spot in the tournament.  The Ravens began district play with a 1-5 record and had to win five of their last six district games to barely make it into the tournament.

“We put ourselves in the situation we were in,” said Downing.  “Cowley will represent our district well at the national tournament.”

Downing and the returning freshmen will be determined to have a different fate next season.  “The group of freshmen are so determined to not only get back to the district tournament, but to be hosting the tournament in 2010,” said Downing.  The top two seeds in district play have the opportunity to host tournament games.

For the sophomores, the loss at Cowley ends their Raven career.  “The toughest thing about junior college coaching is letting your players go after such a short season,” said Downing.  “I know that these women will make any university coach happy as they head to the next level.”

The Ravens finished the year with a 24-13 overall record.
