Coffeyville 59, State Fair 56

Coffeyville defeated State Fair, Missouri 59-56 Saturday night in a tight defensive battle in the second evening of the Regal Inn Coffeyville Classic held in Nellis Hall.  In the opening game of the evening, Lake Land held off Fort Scott 81-74. Coffeyville led 25-17 at the half and led by as many as ten, 48-38, with 7:13 remaining in the second half.

State Fair went on a 15-5 run and knotted the score at 53 on a Brandy Purnell three-point play with 2:12 remaining in the game.  Andrea Dill answered for Coffeyville with a mid-range jumper at the 1:49 mark to give Coffeyville a 55-53 lead.  On the ensuing State Fair possession, the Coffeyville defense forced a jump ball.  The possession arrow favored Coffeyville, giving the Lady Ravens control of the ball with 1:25 left.

At the 1:11 mark, State Fair's Ashley Sutfcliff fouled Coffeyville's Cherene Haynes on a shot attempt.  Haynes drained 1-of-2, giving Coffeyville a 56-53 advantage.  On the following State Fair possession, the Ravens' Whitnee Miller fouled State Fair's Mahogany Wilson on a three-point attempt with 56 seconds left in the game.  Wilson made the second free throw, cutting the lead to 56-54, but missed the third.  Purnell gathered in the rebound and put back the missed free throw, tying the score at 56 with 53 seconds remaining. 

On the next Coffeyville possession, State Fair's Marchelle Gaines got her fifth foul on a shot attempt by the Lady Ravens' Becky Gibson at the 41 second mark.  Gibson sank both free throws, giving the Lady Ravens a 58-56 lead.  Gibson then got busy on the defensive end, making a steal with 30 seconds left.  The Lady Ravens ran the clock down to nine seconds before Mahogany Wilson was able to foul Coffeyville' Cherene Haynes.  Haynes made 1-of-2 free throws, giving the Lady Ravens a 59-56 advantage.

State Fair had one last chance to send the game to overtime.  However, a desperation three-point attempt by Mindi Jenkins was short, giving Coffeyville a hard-fought 59-56 win over State Fair.

Andrea Dill had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Ravens who improve to 3-1 on the season.  Becky Gibson added 11 points and Marquita Thompson had eight points and 10 rebounds.  Debbie Burris added six points for Coffeyville.  Also scoring for the Lady Ravens were Whitnee Miller, Amy Hammond, and Cherene Haynes with four points each, Tamara Vincent and India Reeves added three each and Rudy Crittendon had one.  Miller was the assist leader with six.

For State Fair, Brandy Purnell scored 27 points on 13-of-24 shooting and pulled down 14 rebounds.  Sicarra Farris had 10 points and Marchalle Gaines and Mahogany Wilson scored seven each.  Sonia York and Tamekia Jones added two each and Ashley Sutcliff had one.  State Fair shot 28% from the field for the game.  Players other than Purnell made just 9-of-54 shots.

The Lady Ravens shot 37% from the field on 20-of-54 shooting and struggled from three-point range, making just 2-of-13 attempts.  State Fair out-rebounded Coffeyville by a 58 to 43 margin.

Coffeyville returns to action on Tuesday when the team travels to Arkansas-Ft. Smith for a 6 p.m. game.  The next home game for the Lady Ravens is Nov. 23 when they invite NEO into Nellis Hall for a 6 p.m. contest.

Lake Land 81, Fort Scott 74 

Lake Land, who trailed 44-43 at the half, pulled away late to defeat Fort Scott 81-74 in Saturday’s opening game of the Coffeyville Classic held in Nellis Hall.  Jenna Fieldbinder led a balanced scoring attack for Lake Land with 19 points.  Also in double-figures for the Lady Lakers were Rachel Schleef with 18 points, and Janielle Fritcher and Amanda Phillips scored 11 each.  Sara Crippes scored eight points, Deanna Morr had six points, Monica Toure had two and Jessica Gaesser added one.  The Lady Lakers shot just 32% from the field, but tallied 27 offensive rebounds which led to an 82-60 shot advantage over Fort Scott.

Shae Smith led Fort Scott with 27 points and Teya Warner had 21 points and seven rebounds.  Tewanna Pettigrew had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Also scoring for Fort Scott were Shantay Dickerson with seven points and Natalie Sampson and Lauren Smith added two each.
