EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Program Prerequisites

Applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age and have in their possession a valid driver’s license.   

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent.  Documentation of this requirement is required.  The high school transcript must be sent to the Registrars office, if you graduated high school within the last 5 years, before enrolling in the course. 

Applicants must have in their possession proof of current EMT certification (State of Kansas and/or National Registry of EMT’s). 

Applicants must provide a post-secondary transcript which includes successful completion (grade of “C” or higher) of an Anatomy and Physiology course. 

Applicants must provide records of current immunizations, to include MMR, Tet Tox within last five years, Hep B series completed within last five years or titer, and Tb Tine within last six months of start of clinical rotations. 

The applicant, if previously convicted of a felony, must demonstrate to the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services that all necessary legal constraints have been met and/or satisfied.  The applicant is also advised that any felony conviction must be reviewed by the Investigations Committee of the Kansas Board of EMS.  The Committee will make a determination if the applicant will be allowed to make request for certification.  If the applicant has any questions regarding this prerequisite, the applicant should call Ken Keller or Jerry Cunningham, Investigations Division, Kansas Board of EMS at 785-296-7296. 

The applicant must have completed the general education requirements as approved by Registrar of institution PRIOR to enrollment date of Field Internship semester.   

General Education Requirements are as follows for an Associate of Applied Science:

Communications:   6 credit hours

English Composition I,  3 credit hours

Any one of the following:

Applied Communications, Public speaking, Interpersonal & Group Communications

Math:    3.0 credit hours

Business Mathematics

Computer Science:  3.0 credit hours

Computer Information Systems, or Introduction to Software Applications

Humanities:    3.0 credit hours

Art, Communication, Theatre, Foreign Language, History, Humanities, Journalism, Literature, Music, Philosophy

Business Management:    3.0 credit hours

Fundamentals of Business, Principles of Management, Psychology of Business, Small Business Management

                                    

The applicant must make application to the National Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Association for testing and certification and pay the required fees within one year of completion of program. 

If the applicant desires Kansas MICT certification, the applicant must make application and pay the fees to the Kansas Board of EMS, Topeka, Kansas. 

The applicant must successfully complete the National Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic practical and written exam.
