Red Raven Meats Judging Team Reserve National Champions

The Coffeyville Community College (CCC) Red Raven Meats Team ended the judging year as Reserve National Champions.  In addition to team honors, there were only four individuals named to the American Meat Science Association first team all Americans and Coffeyville had two – Shanna Ward of Coffeyville, Kan. and Shayna Dunlap of Estancia, New Mexico. 

The Meat Judging team’s year began in January 2007 at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo.  The team includes Ward, Dunlap, Andy Boecker of Bentonville, Ark.; Caland Stotts of Coffeyville, Kan. and Tate Corliss of Estancia, New Mexico.  The 7th place finish at the National Western Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest was a slow start to a successful season.  The team went on to win fourth at the Southwestern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in Ft. Worth, Tex.  They finished second at the next four contests. 

The Red Ravens took second overall at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in Houston, Tex.  The team took first in beef judging, first in lamb judging, second overall in beef, first in pork, first in placings and first in questions.  Ward took first overall while Dunlap took fourth overall.  In beef grading, Ward took first and Sisco took 10th.  In overall beef judging, Ward took first and Boecker took ninth.  In lamb judging, Ward took first and Dunlap took fifth.  Dunlap took first in pork judging while Ward took second and Sisco took seventh.  In placings, Ward took first and Dunlap took fifth.  In questions, Ward took first, Sisco took fourth and Dunlap took ninth. 

The Red Ravens took second overall and first in lamb judging at the Beef Empire Days Contest in Garden City, Kan.   Individually, Dunlap took fourth overall, Corliss took sixth and Boecker took 10th.  In beef judging, Dunlap took third, Boecker took fifth and Corliss took seventh.  In beef grading, Boecker took 10th.  In lamb judging, Ward took third, Dunlap took sixth and Corliss took 10th.  In pork judging, Dunlap took fourth and Corliss took sixth.  In placings, Dunlap took sixth.  Dunlap also took first in questions and Corliss took seventh. 

At the American Royal Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in Emporia, Kan. the team took second overall and first overall in placings.  Ward took fourth overall at the contest while Dunlap took 8th in beef judging and Corliss took 10th.  In beef grading, Ward took third.  She also took sixth in overall beef.  Dunlap took seventh in lamb judging.  Ward took first in pork judging.  Boecker took first in placings and Ward took seventh in questions.

The Red Ravens saved the best for last at they were named Reserve National Champions at the High Plains Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in Plainview, Tex.  As a team they also took first in beef judging, second in overall beef, first in pork, second in placings and second in questions.  Individually, Dunlap took fourth overall, Boecker took seventh, Ward took eighth and Corliss took 12th.  In beef judging, Boecker took sixth and Ward took seventh.  In overall beef, Boecker took seventh.  In lamb judging, Corliss took sixth and Dunlap took seventh.  In pork judging Dunlap took third, Ward took fourth, Boecker took sixth and Stotts took eighth.  Ward took sixth in placing and Corliss took 10th.  In questions, Dunlap took sixth, Boecker took seventh and Ward took eighth.
