Steve
Kinder to serve as Master of Ceremonies at Coffeyville Powwow
Steve Kinder of Peoria and Wea descent, will once
again serve as emcee at the 15th Annual Coffeyville Gathering
and Indian Art Market slated for April 18-19. Kinder has been employed
since 1988 with the Division of Continuing Education at the University
of Kansas in Lawrence. He worked for many years as a project manager
and desktop publishing specialist for print publications before becoming
a web developer and managing the KU Continuing Education web site and
other University web projects. Prior to KU, Kinder taught Journalism at
Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla. for seven years. He also served as
the public information officer at Bacone. While at the College he was
one of the faculty sponsors for the Bacone Indian Club. Kinder grew up
in Quapaw and attended school there, graduating from Quapaw High School
in 1974. He receive an Associate of Arts degree from Northeastern A&M
College in Miami in 1976 and holds a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism and
a Masters Degree in Junior College Teaching from Northeastern State
University in Tahlequah. Kinder was one of the original members of the
Intertribal Songchiefs, a northeastern Oklahoma drum group. He is a
member of the Northeastern Oklahoma Tia Piah Society. Over the years he
has served as emcee, Head Singer and Head Dancer at a number of
powwows. He is the son of the late Billy Quinn and Helen Skye Kinder of
Quapaw, Okla. His paternal grandparents were William Blake and Ola
Kinder of Hockerville, Okla. and his maternal grandparents were Amos and
Jessie Skye of Baxter Springs, Kan. Steve married Peggy Hancock, a
member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, in 1983. They live in
Gladstone, Mo., a suburb of Kansas City and are the proud parents of
twin boys, William and Joseph, 15.
The Coffeyville Gathering and Indian Art Market
begins on Friday, April 18 with a Stomp Dance from 7-11 p.m. The event
continues on Saturday, April 19 with a Gourd Dance and Powwow starting
at 3 p.m. All events are held in the Nellis Gym of Coffeyville
Community College (CCC) at 604 W. 11 St. (Hwy. 166) in Coffeyville,
Kan. Vendor space is free with a donation. The Gathering is presented
by the CCC Native American Leadership Association and the Coffeyville
Public Schools Title VIII and JOM Indian Education programs.
Coffeyville Indian Education is funded by two federal grants: Office of
Indian Education for $84,101 and Johnson-O'Malley Cherokee Nation
Co-Partner Program for $8,500.
