Academic Challenge Team places fourth at state championship tournament

The Coffeyville Community College Academic Challenge Team placed in a fourth place tie with Dodge City at the state championship tournament the weekend of April 30. The tournament was hosted by Kansas State University-Salina and twelve Kansas junior college teams competed.

Coffeyville finished with a 7-4 record. Johnson County won the tournament, followed by Cowley in second and Colby in third.

Coffeyville started play by dropping a 210-190 decision to Colby. Coffeyville rallied to win their next four matches over Allen County, Garden City, Neosho County and Kansas City. Dodge City ended the streak by nipping Coffeyville 190-180. Coffeyville rebounded for a 290-130 win over Cloud County before dropping two straight matches to Cowley and Johnson County. Coffeyville ended the tournament on a high note by winning their final two matches over Pratt and Hutchinson.

Coffeyville’s James Deckard placed as second individual medalist at the tournament. Deckard answered 73 toss-up questions in 11 rounds. Kylee Utt was 15th individually, answering 28 toss-up questions in 11 rounds. Also competing for Coffeyville was Elijah Herrington.
