Call Me Raven: CCC Students Share Name With Mascot

How often can one say that their name is the same as the mascot of the school they attend?  Well, for some students this is not such an outrageous idea.  In fact, for Coffeyville Community College students Raven Cameron and Raven Graves, it is an actuality.  Both Raven Cameron and Raven Graves are attending CCC this year and share their name with the school mascot.

Both Raven Cameron and Raven Graves are freshmen this year and came to Coffeyville Community College from two towns 28 miles from each other: Cameron from Topeka and Graves from Lawrence.  Cameron is a psychology major and Graves a music education major, and for both students, there was no special connection or influence to attend the school based on the mascot. “I liked the school and I thought it would be a good decision for me to come here and get trained by Coach Wood,” said Cameron who is on the track and field team.

In Graves’s case, she wasn’t even aware the school mascot was a Raven. “When I found out the mascot of my future school, I laughed," said Graves.

Of course with a name like Raven at a school where the mascot is a raven, certain reactions are to be expected.  Cameron has been told it means that she is destined to be here or it’s a sign that she belongs.  “A lot of people think it’s cool,” said Cameron.  As for Graves people will ask, “Raven?  Like our school?” or refer to the TV show "That’s so Raven."

Their name isn’t the only thing these two ladies have in common.  They both share a love for music and writing and both plan to go on to four year universities.  Cameron also enjoys sports and likes to read while Graves, who is in the choir program, enjoys singing and has performed the National Anthem at soccer, basketball and volleyball games in high school.

When asked if given a super power, what they would choose and why; Cameron responded, “My one power would be to read people’s minds.  It would make me a better psychologist”, and Graves responded, “I’d want to fly because after all, I am a raven.”
