CCC's Participation in Community Mentor Program Makes a Difference

Coffeyville Community College encouraged faculty, staff, and students to make a difference and participate in the Community Mentoring Program at Coffeyville's Community Elementary School.

“Giving a little time weekly will bring a lot to our community in return,” said Chelsey Martin, CES Counselor. “It takes just a few hours a month to make a huge difference in a life of a child. The future of our community depends on the mentors of our youth. Our children need a positive role model to help them grow and become citizens in our society.”

Community Cares Mentoring is a school based program that allows community members to engage in a child’s life at Community Elementary. Students are paired with a mentor who they see once a week for 30 minutes. During this time a trusting relationship is built, students get assisted on reading and homework, as well as play games and interact.

This being the first year, the program had over 20 mentors.

“I believe that being a mentor is more than just hanging out with a child, it builds character and leadership skills,” said Evalys Azuara, student at CCC. “It's great knowing the child looks up to you! Plus, you never know the difference it could make in that child's life!”

Participants from CCC found the experience to be beneficial and would encourage other community members to get involved with the program.

“I enjoy my quality time spent at Community Elementary with my student and I have made a new friend,” said Kim Blaes, Executive Assistant to the President at CCC. “I would encourage others in the community to join the mentoring program.  It doesn't take very much of your time, and everyone participating wins.”
