Due to thoughtful planning, the legacy of Dolretta and Joe Woodard will live on through the Coffeyville Community College Foundation.  The Woodard’s left a generous gift through their trust to be endowed by the CCC Foundation.  The gift will allow the foundation to scholarship an additional eight students per year.

“The wonderful generosity of Mr. & Mrs. Woodard is amazing.  They understood the importance of educating our kids and what an impact education makes in a person’s life,” said Dickie Rolls, Executive Director of the CCC Foundation.  “We are truly grateful to them for entrusting The Coffeyville Community College Foundation with their thoughtful gift.  Their legacy will live on, and the students whose lives they touch through these scholarships will forever be blessed by their gift…the gift of education - the gift of opportunity.”

Dolretta Pyatt Woodard was born in 1919 in Osawatomie.  Her family moved to Coffeyville in 1921. She attended school and graduated from Field Kindley in 1937.  She attended Coffeyville Community College for one year and then went to work for a lawyer.  She worked for the Coffeyville Mercantile Company and later for the Taylor Bag Company.

Joe C. Woodard was born in 1909 in Pittsburg, Kansas to Joe C. Sr. and Rena Woodard.  He graduated from Pittsburg High School and attended Kansas State Teachers College.  In 1937, he moved to Coffeyville where he worked for a local cleaner, Coffeyville Mercantile Co., and managed Central States Wolesale Grocery Co.

The couple married in 1940 and made their home in Coffeyville until 1952 when they moved to Phillips, Texas where they were both employed by Phillips Petroleum.  After retirement, the couple made their home in Coffeyville and Bella Vista, Arkansas.

The Woodard’s were active in the community and obviously cared about CCC.  Through their gift, they will fund education for students who might not otherwise attend college for many years to come.  The Woodard’s left behind a legacy that fosters growth for the community and the students of Coffeyville Community College.
