Former Coffeyville Red Raven redshirt wide receiver John Brown was taken in the third round of the NFL draft this past weekend. Brown was selected with the 91st overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals.
After a year at Mars Hill College in North Carolina, Brown spent a redshirt year at Coffeyville in 2010 where he was able to get his academics back in order. Brown was also behind Quinton Patton, a 2013 NFL draftee, and Duron Carter, son of NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter, on the Red Raven depth chart and this was at a time where Jayhawk Conference schools could only certify 12 out-of-state players on the roster.
However, two former Red Raven coaches on the 2010 staff with Pittsburg State University connections, Ike Eguae a former Gorilla defensive end, and Jon Wiemers, brother of PSU's Assistant Head Coach Dave Wiemers, sent word to the PSU coaching staff of a rising talent with impressive performances during Red Raven practices.
Brown signed with PSU and played three seasons with the Gorillas, helping PSU to the NCAA D-II national title his sophomore year in 2011. Brown's stock really started to take off after the NFL combines this spring and that ultimately led to his selection in the third round of the draft.
The Joplin Globe newspaper has an outstanding article on the rise of Brown from his days as a standout high school player in southern Florida to finding college success in Kansas. The article was published on August 25, 2012.
