Markham Qualifies for THE AMERICAN Rodeo

February 24, 2014

Coffeyville Community College Sophomore Team Roper Cale Markham has qualified for the single largest 1-day cash prize event in the history of rodeo, THE AMERICAN.  Markham and his healing partner Buddy Hawkins of Columbus, Kansas have qualified through a series of great performances.

RFD-TV’s THE AMERICAN will take place at Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium on March 2, 2014, with an estimated attendance of 75,000 fans. With $2-million on the line, the best athletes in the world will be gathering in Dallas to compete in one epic day of raw rodeo will, skill and power.

THE AMERICAN invited the top 10 athletes in each of the traditional rodeo sports.  But in addition to those ten, THE AMERICAN will make five additional spots available for any rodeo athlete in the world through five regional qualifiers. If one of those athletes goes on to win their respective event at THE AMERICAN they will split an additional bonus pool of $1-million dollars in prize money.

Markham had to finish well in a series of qualifying rounds to get to THE AMERICAN.  First, to compete at Mesquite, Markham had to be in the top ten at one of the Mesquite qualifying rodeos.  Then as one of fifty ropers that competed at Mesquite, he had to be in the top twenty in the two head average to advance to the final round.  Markham finished second in the final round with a time of 4.91 seconds.  And best yet, he qualified to compete with the best of the best at THE AMERICAN.

Local fans will have the chance to cheer on Markham during the live broadcast on Sunday on RFD-TV.  Markham is a third generation roper from Vinita, Okla. who will be riding his Grandpa’s horse Cowboy.  He is the son of Clint and Kathy Markham.
