Four sophomores from the 2014 Coffeyville Community College men’s basketball team have signed NCAA scholarship offers to play at the next level. Those four sophomores include Mike Martin from Wichita, Kansas; Travis Britt from Rantoul, Illinois; Earl Peterson from Raytown, Missouri; and Montel James from Kenner, Louisiana.
Earl Peterson, a six foot 3 inch guard, and Montel James , a six foot seven inch forward, have both signed scholarship agreements to play for Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. Peterson is coming off his second season with the Red Ravens where he averaged 16.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Peterson was voted a First Team All-Conference selection at the end of his sophomore season. “I felt Loyola was a good place for me and that it also has the degree that I was looking for,” said Peterson.
Montel James finished his sophomore season for the Red Ravens by averaging 12.8 points to go along with 4.8 rebounds per game. James was voted a Second Team All-Conference selection to wrap up his sophomore season. On his decision to sign with Loyola, James said that “I thought it was a good fit and it is where I believe I could be the most successful.”
On having two of his sophomores sign with the same Division I school, Herkelman said, “It is great for both guys to go together. They came to Coffeyville and have roomed together and been together through their time at Coffeyville. You don’t see guys come in together and then transfer together very often.”
Mike Martin, a six foot guard for the Red Ravens, has signed a scholarship agreement to play at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas. Martin is coming off of a season with the Red Ravens where he averaged 10.0 points per game while contributing 3.1 assists per game. He was voted this year as an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection. When asked about his decision to sign with Central Arkansas, Martin said that “the coach and team have a familiar feeling that I thought would be a good fit for me.”
Jay Herkelman, head coach for the Coffeyville Community College men’s basketball team, commented on Martin’s signing with Central Arkansas by saying, “Mike came in with us and worked hard and set a goal of earning a scholarship to the next level. The Central Arkansas coach started the recruiting process with Mike and I am excited to see that Mike is signing with them. Mike will work hard for them.”
Travis Britt, a six foot three inch guard for the Red Ravens, has signed a scholarship agreement to play at NCAA division II Southern Indiana University in Evansville, Indiana. Britt averaged four points and an assist per game this year for the Red Ravens. Britt was voted as an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection during his freshman season in 2013 with the Red Ravens. On his decision to sign with Southern Indiana, Britt said that “Southern Indiana has a good coach and program and I liked the area and it is close to home.” Britt added that “it is also close to my favorite Mexican restaurant.”
Coach Herkelman commented on Britt’s signing by saying “They recruited Travis out of high school and I am glad that he is going somewhere familiar. I like that he is going to a well coached team in an extremely strong NCAA Division II conference.”
