Ravens Survive Dodge City Upset Bid, Advance to Wichita
March 1, 2014
Malcolm Davis scores a bucket and gets fouled in the process during the Ravens come-from-behind 67-64 win over Dodge City on Saturday night.
When you get into post-season basketball, teams that advance sometimes have to just escape and survive. And that is exactly what the Coffeyville Red Ravens did in their 67-64 win over the Dodge City Conquistadors in a first round Region VI playoff game on Saturday night in Nellis Hall.
Dodge City took it to Coffeyville in the first half, leading by as many as 12. The Conquistadors settled for a 36-27 halftime lead, but it was evident the Ravens were in for quite the tussle.
Dodge City maintained the lead in the second half until the 4:24 mark when the Ravens took a 58-56 lead. Dodge City didn't fold and had regained a one point lead with a minute left in regulation.
The Ravens trailed 64-63 until Carl Crawford put the Ravens up for good with a bucket inside the paint with 39.6 seconds left in regulation. Leading 65-64, the Ravens got a stop on the defensive end and the Ravens' Malcolm Davis was fouled with 19 ticks remaining. Davis made 1-of-2 free throws to extend the Ravens' lead to 66-64.
Dodge City had a golden opportunity to pull even with 10.9 seconds left, but Larry Beckett missed both ends of a double bonus free throw attempt. The Ravens got the rebound on the second miss and Earl Peterson was promptly fouled with nine seconds left. Peterson made the first free throw attempt to give Coffeyville a 67-64 lead, but he missed the second giving the Conquistadors one last chance. However, two desparation three-point attempts missed the mark, allowing the Ravens to escape with the 67-64 win.
Montel James had 19 points to lead the Ravens. James was 7-for-10 from the field. Earl Peterson scored 15 points and made 7-of-10 free throw attempts. Peterson had a team-high four assists.
EJ Eaves scored 18 points to lead Dodge City. Larry Beckett added 14 points and Ameer Jackson scored 13. Jackson, however, received his second technical foul of the game with 4:24 left in regulation and was ejected from the game. His presence, or lack thereof, turned out to be critical for Dodge City down the stretch.
The Ravens struggled from the field, making 39% of their field goal attempts. The Ravens, though, turned the ball over just seven times and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds. Dodge City shot 46% from the field, but they had 16 fewer field goal attempts than the Ravens.
Coffeyville, 23-8 overall on the season, will advance to the Region VI Tournament in Wichita. The Ravens will play Pratt on Thursday at 5 p.m. in a region quarterfinal game. Pratt defeated Labette 93-71 on Saturday night to advance.
The region tournament will be played at Koch Arena on the campus of Wichita State University.
