Slagle and Branum Hit Back-To-Back HRs In Ravens Loss To Barton County

May 2, 2012

Luke Slagle and John Branum hit back-to-back homers on back-to-back pitches in the seventh inning, but it wasn't quite enough as the Barton County Cougars held off the Coffeyville Red Ravens 9-6 on Tuesday. The game was played at Emporia State University.

Barton County scored two runs in the third to take an early lead, but the answers answered right back in the top of the fourth inning. Alex Wilson, Robbie Hoffman and Jordan Hodges hit consecutive one-out singles with Hodges' knock driving in Wilson. Tyler Beebe laid down a squeeze bunt to bring Hoffman home for the Ravens second run that tied the score at 2-2.

Barton took the lead for good with runs in their half of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. The Ravens got a run back in the top of the fifth on Branum's RBI single that scored Adam Valencia who had singled to start the inning.

Barton County extended the lead to 8-3 with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Coffeyville would rally in the seventh to close the gap. Cole Webb doubled with one out and then Slagle followed with a two-run homer to left center. Branum followed with a first pitch homer to left center that narrowed the Ravens' deficit to 8-6. The Ravens had a chance for more, but they left the bases loaded to end the inning.

Barton County would tack on an insurance run in the eighth to make the final score 9-6. Starter Stephen Foster was tagged with the loss. Foster allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two. Garrett Blankenship and Branum each tossed a scoreless inning in relief for the Ravens who end the regular season with a 28-28 record.

On Monday, the Ravens set a school record for conference wins in a season. The Ravens split a doubleheader with Cowley to end the conference season with a 22-14 mark. The previous record for conference wins in a season was 21 set in 2010.

The Ravens will travel to Liberal, Kansas, this weekend to play in a sub-region tournament hosted by Seward County. Coffeyville, Seward County, Allen County and Colby will be competing in a double elimination tournament starting on Saturday and ending on Monday. The winner of the tournament will advance to the Region VI Tournament starting on May 12 in Wichita.
