April 29, 2014
Racquel Williams, right, established a new school record at a meet hosted by Missouri Southern State University on Friday. Williams broke her own school record in the shot put. Shaniqua Knowles, left, missed setting a new school triple jump record by 1".
The Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens track team competed at a meet hosted by Missouri Southern State University in Joplin on Friday and two athletes on the women's team established new school records.
Shaniqua Knowles is a new national qualifier in the triple jump. Knowles had a best jump of 11.52 meters (37'-9.5"), exceeding the national qualifying standard by .04 meters. Knowles' mark missed setting a new school by an inch. It was thought Knowles set a new school record, but a clerical error at last year's national meet was uncovered. Torriah Bell still holds the school record of 37'-10.5" established at last year's outdoor national meet.
Also setting a school record this weekend for the Ravens was Racquel Williams in the shot put. Williams, who already owned the outdoor record in the women's shot, had a throw of 14.55 meters (47'-9") at Joplin. Williams, who also owns the school's indoor shot put record, had already qualified for nationals earlier in the season in the shot.
Teammate Kallie Buck, though, is a new national qualifier in the shot put. Buck had a throw of 12.88 meters (42'-3.25") at the Joplin meet. This year's national qualifying standard in the women's shot put is 12.67 meters.
Jammeria Higdon is another new national qualifier for the Ravens. Higdon completed the 100 meter dash in 11.87 seconds to place second in the event at Joplin. More importantly, Higdon bested the national qualifying standard of 12.10 seconds.
Also qualifying for the national meet was the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Vallerie Norgaisse, Stephanie Aidoo, Thronda Craig and Rashe Boynton. The foursome completed the event with a time of 3:53.19. The national qualifying standard for the women's 4 x 400 is 4:04.95.
On the men's side, Angelo Goss made a national qualifying mark in the men's high jump. Goss had a best jump of 2.05 meters (6'-8.75"). The national qualifying mark this year is 2.03 meters. Goss had previously qualified for the national outdoor meet in the 110 meter hurdles.
Charvin Graham is a new national qualifier in the hammer throw with his throw of 50.81 meters (166'-8") this past weekend. Graham had previously qualified for the national meet in the discus.
Trenton Thomas made a national qualifying standard in the javelin. Thomas had a throw of 55.38 meters (181'-8") at the Joplin meet. The national qualifying standard in the javelin is 53.27 meters.
