College places third in season opening Academic Challenge tourneyThe Coffeyville Community College Academic Challenge team placed third in their season opening tournament on March 8. The Ravens placed third out of six teams at the Academic Challenge Preliminary Tournament hosted by Neosho County Community College in Chanute. The Ravens won three and lost two during the tournament. Coffeyville got off to a slow start, dropping their opening match 110-90 to Kansas City Community College. The Ravens would bounce back to win their next three matches. Coffeyville defeated Allen County 175-70, Johnson County 135-130, and Cowley 135-100. The Ravens dropped the final match of the day to host Neosho County, 190-120. Tyro freshman Samantha Henry placed fourth individually at the tournament. In five games, Henry answered 22 toss-up questions. Caney freshman Chance Harmon placed seventh individually and Shawnee freshman Matt Nelson placed ninth. Also competing for the Ravens were Jeramiah Black, a freshman from Salina, Oklahoma, and Shehan Fernando, a sophomore from Sri Lanka. Academic Challenge is a quiz bowl competition played by a majority of the community colleges in Kansas. Competitors must be enrolled in at least six hours for the college they represent and have less than 72 total hours in their academic career. Questions are similar to those found on the TV game show Jeopardy and categories are those found in the general education curriculum at the state community colleges. Sponsors for CCC are Physics Instructor Ryan Willis and Information Specialist Chuck Reed. The Ravens will compete next at the Academic Challenge Regional Tournament to be held March 29 in Wamego, Kansas. The Ravens will complete the tournament schedule on April 25-26 at the Academic Challenge State Tournament in Colby, Kansas. |
