CCC Automotive Technology Program Receives National Certification

The Automotive Technology program at Coffeyville Community College (CCC) has received certification by NATEF and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

To achieve this coveted recognition, the school’s automotive training program underwent rigorous evaluation by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF).  Nationally accepted standards of excellence in areas such as instruction, facilities and equipment were used.  There are nine standards and 3-5 subcategories that must be proven in order to receive certification.

“This is fast becoming the necessary standard for auto programs to turn out students to work in industry,” said CCC instructor, Roy Shafer.  “About 60% of programs in the U.S. have this certification.

Morris Harvey and Roy Shafer

CCC Automotive Technology instructors (L-R) Morris Harvey and Roy Shafer pose with their new sign showing the department is now ASE Certified.

“This is great news for automotive-minded young people and their parents,” said Donald Seyfer, NATEF Chair.  “This program increases cooperation between local education and industry leaders, it gives added assurance that CCC’s graduates will be employable entry-level technicians.  As a result of the quality education provided by CCC, the motoring public will benefit since better repair technicians will join the work force.”

Shafer says that the ASE certification will make the required certification test easier for students and gives them points and additional money as they apply for jobs.  Graduates of an ASE Certified program are able to be ASE Certified with only one year of experience versus the two years previously required.

The CCC program will now have the opportunity to apply for a number of grants from industry and the government and the ASE Certification will assist the college in securing Perkins funding in the future.

“We are really, really tickled,” said Shafer.

NATEF did give CCC some recommendations which the College has already put into place.  CCC will build on this success as they are required to reapply for ASE Certification every five years.  For more information about the CCC Automotive Technology program call 620-252-7550 ext. 22.
