Red Ravens celebrate Black History Month

The display contained books such as “Up from Slavery”, “African American Voices”, “Those Who Ride the Night Winds” and “Not Without Laughter”, a timeline of Black Music including the history from Griots (storytellers) to blues, jazz soul and rap, movies such as “Beloved” and “Voices and Visions African American”, and more.

These were the items that remained in the display after the month of February.  Coffeyville Community College (CCC) faculty member, Waneta Davis’, African American Literature class put the display together as part of a class assignment in celebration of Black History Month.

“We had a number of items removed from the display once people would see something and want to read it,” said Davis.

The CCC African American Literature class transfers to four-year schools as a literature class or ethnic studies class.

“We learn about stuff most classes don’t teach and it goes more in depth,” said student, Sarah McClellan.

Students are now rebuilding the display to feature southern writers.  The display is located on the second floor of the CCC Arts and Sciences building.
