Coffeyville Community College (CCC) art students not only passed the preliminary judging to make it into the Southeast Kansas Art Competition, but then they took a number of the top honors.

“Overall I was very impressed with the students’ work that represented CCC this year,” said Red Raven Art Instructor, Michael DeRosa.  “We were definitely the strongest of all the schools presenting work at the competition.”

The Art Competition is held at the Independence Museum of Art in Independence, Kan.  The show was opened for public viewing starting April 29.  The show was preliminarily judged and those students whose art met the criteria were accepted in the show – an honor in itself.  CCC had a number of student works accepted in the show.

“All the schools took back a lot of work after the first round of judging,” said DeRosa.

Once accepted in the show, each category is critiqued by two judges who award first, second and third place as well as two honorable mentions.

CCC student artist, Lyle Eddy of Glenpool, Okla., took second place and honorable mention with two entries in painting.  Michael Stice of Elk City, Kan. took third in painting and first in the “other 2-dimensional” category.  Adrianna Espe of Coffeyville, Kan. earned the instructors choice award in painting.  Amanda Moseley of Caney, Kan. took honorable mention with her horse drawing and second place in the ceramics contest.  Tyler Roush of Coffeyville, Kan. also took honorable mention in the drawing category.  Michael Steen of Coffeyville, Kan. earned the instructor’s choice award in the drawing category.  In the sculpture category, CCC artist, Brandon Davidson, of Cherryvale, Kan. took third.  Shaylee Volz of Elk City, Kan. took honorable mention in the ceramics category.  Darcy Hurlbutt of Coffeyville, Kan. cleaned up in the photography contest with first, second and honorable mention placings on with three photos.
