CCC helps in flood recovery processCoffeyville Community College (CCC) Red Ravens have responded to the recent flooding with housing, volunteer hours and support. Both residence halls filled up fast as the college began housing 440 emergency responders including fire and rescue, Red Cross, EPA, National Guard, law enforcement and the Coast Guard. Command centers, computers and other facilities across campus have also been used by local businesses as well as emergency responders. Many CCC faculty and staff have volunteered to help with the distribution of water, answer phone calls for the city, wash and care for animals at the animal shelters, assist with paperwork and badges for the city and much more. They donated clothing and food and some trained to help with counseling victims. College administrators foresee many student organizations also helping with the recovery and rebuilding of the community once the students are on campus this fall. The College will open its doors on time with some athletes and activity participants moving in the first of August. Classes officially start on August 14 for the technical campus and August 15 for main campus. The resignation of a coach and loss of practice facilities at the fairgrounds has resulted in the temporary suspension of the CCC Rodeo Team. Administrators hope to fill the coaching position in January with students roping and riding again by the fall of 2008. CCC softball and baseball teams will practice and play at alternative facilities while they rebuild the fields damaged by flooding. The college will welcome a new women’s golf team in the fall of 2007 and hopes to build on the 7% increase in enrollment of the past year. The College will continue to be active in supporting the clean up and recovery of the community. |
