Expanding Opportunities in the CCC Emergency Medicine Department

The Coffeyville Community College (CCC) Emergency Medicine Department is on the move and growing to accommodate the needs of the area.

It is testing time for many of the CCC Emergency Medicine students.  This spring, six paramedic students sat for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians - Paramedic level test and received a 100 percent pass rate in both the written and practical examination.  These were the first students from the Coffeyville program to utilize computer aided testing instead of a written exam.  CCC is the test site for EMT level testing in this region which is comprised of 12 counties in the southeast corner of Kansas.  On March 3, 20 EMT students participated in the state board examination on campus as members of the Regional Examination team held an examination site for both written and practical testing.  Fifteen of those students were CCC EMT students who were under the instruction of Patrick Pomeroy, MICT I/C.   The first CCC Phlebotomy students are preparing to sit for the registry examination soon.  Since the new program was implemented in the fall of 2006, the response has been profound, increasing with every class.  These students are under the instruction of Lisa Miller, MLT, ASCP.

CCC will be hosting an intensive three day seminar of Weapons of Mass Destruction for EMS, Physicians, Nursing, Fire, Police and other medically trained personnel on May 22, 23 and 24.  Participants must register to attend.

The CCC Emergency Services Education Department will have site visit for re-accreditation in May.  The department has been preparing for the visit including the implementation of a process called "Survey Monkey" to assist with student survey process for record maintenance.  This program will automatically send surveys to selected groups and graph information regarding courses and instructors.  This tool will be a resource for providing the information that is needed for course and program documentation.

Students may still sign up for the Certified Phlebotomy course beginning March 26.  Upon completion of this course and a 120 hour clinical rotation, students are eligible to sit for the registry examination to become certified phlebotomists.

The next Fire Science program begins in August and will operate as a night course on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-10 p.m.  The next Paramedic course will also run in the evenings on Monday and Tuesday starting in August.  An EMT-I course will begin in August as well and be taught on Thursday evenings from 5-10 p.m.  The next EMT course starts in August and will be taught in the evenings.

Individuals interested in taking a scuba diving course this summer may sign up today and the department is taking names for the upcoming First Responder course set to start in May.  The First Responder is a three credit hour class.

Current medical personnel may be interested in two new short courses starting in the fall of 2007 – a three credit hour Basic EKG Interpretation class and a three credit hour Pharmacology course.  Both classes are introductory level and would be appropriate for entry level emergency medicine providers.
