CCC adds Society of Physics ClubStudents at Coffeyville Community College (CCC) now have another opportunity to grow outside of the classroom as CCC Faculty Member, Ryan Willis, is now offering a new Physics Club. Willis was asked to develop an academic club and it has been a series of surprises for Willis to get the club going at CCC. “I didn’t think two-year schools could do it,” he said. “The Society of Physics Students for the American Institute of Physics gave me the go-ahead. I was surprised when I asked the students. They wanted to play.” Willis was a member of the Physics Club at Pittsburg State before he became a Physics major. “There is more to physics that what you see in one or two semesters of a college class,” said Willis. “I used physics as a spring board for other areas. My intention with this club is to show students the areas they may use physics.” Willis is planning to have guest speakers at the Physics Club meetings including medical doctors and others that use the science on a daily basis. He wants his club members to go to a professional meeting or two and have the opportunity to apply for another set of scholarships. Members will have access to journals and a monthly magazine and will have the opportunity to run for national office. Students may choose to enter papers in contests as well. The club will have regional and national meetings and Willis would like to see CCC host a regional meeting in the future. “I wanted them to be able to have a membership that is recognized at another schools like KU, K-State and East Coast colleges,” said Willis. “It will help all those applying for engineering school as well. It is a neat opportunity for all CCC students.” The paperwork is still being finalized and Willis will have at least one formal meeting before school is out for the summer. There are currently seven students in the nationally recognized Society of Physics Students for the American Institute of Physics at CCC.
