CCC automotive student wins first at state

Three students in the Coffeyville Community College (CCC) Automotive Technology program placed at the Kansas SkillsUSA competition in Wichita with Patrick Landrum of Independence, Kan. earning first place in the Automotive Written Test. The contest, on April 19, features events for both high school as well as collegiate level students.

The Automotive Written Test covers all eight ASE areas and is based on the NATEF standards. Landrum scored within two point of the collegiate winner on the 100 question test. What makes this an impressive accomplishment is the fact that Landrum has only covered two of the eight sections of ASE covered in the two year program at CCC.

“Patrick is very attentive and interesting in everything that is going on,” said CCC Instructor, Roy Shafer. “He is an excellent student.”

Landrum is finishing his junior year at Independence High School and will return next fall for another year in the CCC Automotive program. He plans to continue his education at the University of Kansas and study mechanical engineering.

“I enjoy this stuff (automotive technology) and I wanted more hands-on practical experience,” said Landrum. “I believe it will give me an edge. I enjoy the CCC program and how we do all kinds of work and see a little bit of everything as we are going through the program.”

Mathew Harp of Coffeyville, Kan. joined Landrum as the pair placed high in the Parts Management Contest while Jon Keiffer of Coffeyville, Kan. placed in the hands-on competition.

Harp will be a senior at Field Kindley next fall and will also return. Keiffer graduated from the CCC Automotive Technology program last weekend and has accepted a position at a GM dealership in Tulsa, Okla.

“We are proud to have them in the Automotive program and expected great accomplishments,” said Shafer.
