In order for a student to be successful in college, they must take charge of their overall well-being. But parents (even from a distance) can help! Staying healthy includes physical, mental, emotional health and more. This is what you can do to support your new college student:
- Offer simple suggestions on how your student can incorporate some physical activity into her busy schedule. Things like taking the stairs when possible, enjoying a walk with a friend or visiting the on-campus fitness center are great workout ideas.
- If you choose to send a care package, make sure to include healthy snacks versus junk food.
- Reiterate to your student the importance of a good night’s sleep.
- If you learn that your student is going through a serious emotional experience, encourage her to speak with her counselor as soon as possible. If she doesn't feel comfortable talking with her counselor, suggest a resident life employee, advisor, campus minister or close friend. Reassure your student that you are there to help as well.
Encourage your student to become involved in school-related activities and community service. This type of involvement will help her to feel included and part of the college community.
