Coffeyville Community College has selected two sophomore students, Colter Comstock and Reina Garcia, to represent the institution on the 21st annual Kansas All-State Academic Team.  They will be honored at a luncheon at the downtown Ramada in Topeka on February 11. 

Kansas is one of 38 states participating in the All-State Academic Team Program.  The State Academic Teams were introduced in 1994 as a way to provide scholastic recognition to Phi Theta Kappa members, while promoting excellence at two-year colleges.  The State Academic Teams are a division of the All-USA Community College Academic Team, presented by USA TODAY, and sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa and Follett Higher Educational group. 

The country’s finest community college students compete for recognition, spots on the national team and scholarships. The Kansas All-State Academic Team is designed to provide the same kind of recognition to our state’s two-year college scholars by saluting their academic achievement, leadership, and service.

As members of the Kansas All-State Academic Team, Colter and Reina will receive:  an honorary medallion and certificate, state-wide recognition through the media, a stipend to be used at the institution of his/her choice, and a minimum $1,000 scholarship for those who enroll at:  Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Kansas University, Pittsburg State University, Wichita State University, and Washburn University.  Other colleges such as Baker, Benedictine, Bethany, Bethel, McPherson, Newman, Saint Mary, Southwestern, Sterling, Kansas Wesleyan, Mid America Nazarene, and Tabor also provide generous scholarships to the nominees. 

Each community college in Kansas can nominate two students to the All-Kansas Academic Team.  As members of the All-Kansas Team, Colter and Reina are also in competition for the New Century Scholar, the highest scoring student of each state, and membership on the All USA TODAY Team as well as the Coca Cola Scholars Program.  Candidates for the All-Kansas Academic Team were selected on the basis of their scholarship, leadership and service to others. 

Reina serves the Eta Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa as Vice President of Membership.  Reina also serves as co-captain of the CCC volleyball team where she was named to the All-Conference Academic First Team.  Reina tutors at Coffeyville Community Elementary School as well as the college Student Success Center.  She has participated in international services projects such as Operation Christmas Child. Reina is from Topeka.

Colter Comstock has served as president of the Eta Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and Vice President of Correspondence for the Kansas Region.  At CCC, Colter has been a head student athletic trainer and participant in the Agriculture Club.  He represented the student body on the college’s Strategic Planning Committee.  In the community, Colter has served as a docent at the Dalton Defenders Museum and assisted with projects at the Brown Mansion.  Colter is from Caney.
