Humanities Project: Janet Rutland Presents Music of Johnny Mercer at Feb. 27 Performance at CCC

Janet Rutland.

Janet Rutland will present the music of Johnny Mercer on the Coffeyville Community College campus on Tuesday, February 27, as part of the CCC Humanities Project. The public is invited to the 10:30 a.m. Tuesday humanities performances at CCC.  The performances are free and held in the Spencer/Rounds Performing Arts Theatre.

Rutland presents an entertaining blend of concert and narrative about Mercer's interesting and celebrated life. "Blues in the Night," "Moon River" and "Come Rain or Come Shine" are among the songs she will perform.

Rutland is a vocalist from Sand Springs, Oklahoma, and a frequent performer at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. She has produced 13 cabaret shows for the annual SummerStage festival at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. She has also embodied a variety of theater roles including the title role in American Theatre Company's "Always. . . Patsy Cline." Rutland enjoys her versatile career as a vocalist performing vintage jazz, pop and country music.

Mercer (1909-1976) was an American lyricist, songwriter, singer and co-founder of Capitol Records. Many of the songs he wrote and performed were among the most popular hits of the time and have become standards in the Great American Songbook. He received 19 Academy Award nominations and won four Best Original Song Oscars. His body of work includes over 1,500 songs – many of which continue to be performed and recorded by popular artists today.
