Auditions for The Orestia by Aeschylus set for Aug. 21

Coffeyville Community College Theatre will hold auditions for "The Orestia", a trilogy of Greek tragic plays of Agamemnon, "Libation Bearers" and "The Furies" by Aeschylus on August 21 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Spencer/Rounds Theatre. Roles are available for five female and five males.

The production will be presented September 29-30 and October 1 at 7:30 p.m.

The story begins with a flickering light that appears on the horizon during Greek times. A fire. A sign! After ten years of fighting in Troy, the beacon glows on the horizon signaling a victorious end to the Greek/Trojan war. Inside the palace, Clytemnestra eagerly awaits the homecoming of her triumphant king Agamemnon. Outwardly her demeanor is one of joy and elation but a dark rage underlies the sweet smiles of jubilation. As her husband sails home, Clytemnestra prepares to exact a horrifying revenge on the man who in order to win this war, sacrificially slit the throat of his own daughter.

A curse has fallen upon the House of Atreus, blood will be shed, familial bonds betrayed and social order disintegrated before the blight on it is lifted. This momentous, award winning, and epic Greek tragedy, is adapted by the Artistic Director of The Sydney Theatre in Australia, Tom Wright, and has been condensed into one heart-stopping evening of theatre. Aeschylus’ powerful tale of justice and revenge has injected new life into one of the bedrocks of Western theatrical tradition.

Auditions are open to any CCC college student, area high school students and area community actors. Auditions will consist of readings from the script. For more information, please contact CCC Theatre Director Mark Frank at 620-251-7700, ext. 2145.
