CCC Relay for Life Team raises $10,000 for American Cancer Society

Hard work and dedication for a deserving cause pay off.  In the September organizational meeting of the Coffeyville Community College Relay for Life team, the team captain commented that he would like to see the team repeat the achievement of three years before of raising $10,000 for the American Cancer Society and the team accepted the challenge.  The First Methodist Church offered their Fellowship Hall as the center for six chicken and noodle lunches.  The team captain made the homemade noodles, Linda McFate made the homemade rolls, and Phi Theta Kappa members volunteered to serve.  With the help of people in businesses like Medicalodge, Tri-State Electric, Bank of America, Watco, Taylor Crane and Rigging, Cook Pump, Coffeyville Resources Fertilizer, Condon Bank, Four State Maintenance, SEKTAM, Muller Construction and others who bought the delivered lunches as well as many walk-in customers, and Country Mart who furnished part of the chicken, the team began to amass funds.  Donations for a drawing on a Michael DeRosa vase, T-shirt sales, tulip sales, Quarters for a Cure, and other fundraisers added to the amount.  Ravens for a Cure came, and with the help of C & J Car Wash, proceeds from the concession stand, antique car show, 5K run, and car wash put in another $800.  Two weeks before the Relay, the team having a total of $8325, the team captain challenged the team to raise at least $500 in luminaria sales.  When the team arrived at Relay, only $310 had been raised and the captain had just about given up hope when an individual came by with a donation of $250.  The total was now near $9,000 and the challenge from September was back on. Four donations yielded $390 and the captain remembered than an aunt may have sent $100.  He went to South Coffeyville and the letter was there.  By now it was past midnight but the drive to fulfill the challenge continued.  The hat was passed garnering $35 more dollars and a member came by and emptied her change totaling $5.  Between 1:30 and 2:00, the captain decided to write a check for the remainder and the miracle was complete.
