Irish Street Ballads: Preserving a Culture Through Song

Description:

From pre-medieval Ireland up until modern times, music and poetry have been integral parts in keeping the history, culture, and traditions of Ireland alive. Buskers and street balladeers were a form of entertainment but also of passing on news and preserving stories that were often forgotten or purposefully suppressed by English occupiers. During this performance Ryan Burns will recount some of the history of Irish folk song, focusing especially on the mid-19th century, post WWII, and modern versions of Irish Street Ballads.
