College theatre to present “The Bald Soprano”

Mr. Smith, left, played by Caleb Coffman, and Mrs. Smith, played by Melissa Delfft, hold an animated discussion in CCC’s The Bald Soprano. Mary, played by Lauren Curley, awaits her next line.

The Coffeyville Community College theatre department will present a readers theatre production of “The Bald Soprano” by Eugene Ionesco on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Show times are 7:30 p.m. each night in the Spencer/Rounds Performing Arts Theatre on the main campus of CCC. Admission is free and the play is rated PG. The plot revolves around the Smiths, a traditional couple from London, who have invited another couple, the Martins, over for a visit. They are joined later by the Smiths' maid, Mary, and the local fire chief, who is also Mary's lover. The two families engage in meaningless banter, telling stories and relating nonsensical poems. Mrs. Martin at one point converses with her husband as if he were a stranger she just met. As the fire chief turns to leave, he mentions "the bald soprano" in passing, which has a very unsettling effect on the others. Mrs. Smith replies that "she always wears her hair in the same style." After the Fire Chief's exit, the play devolves into a series of complete non-sequiturs, with no resemblance to normal conversation. It ends with the two couples shouting in unison "It's not that way. It's over here;” or in some translations, "It's not over there. It's over here!" Seven performers are cast in the play that lasts about 45 minutes. Performers in the play include Jake Kaufman as the Narrator, Caleb Coffman as Mr. Smith, Melissa Delfft as Mrs. Smith, Jake Bowles as Mr. Martin, Melaina Walker as Mrs. Martin, Lauren Curley as Mary the Maid, and Dalton Smith as The Fire Captain. Bethanie Frank is the play’s director. The stage manager is Kody Halfhide and the sound board operator is Phil Morris. Robin Ensz is the light board operator and the backstage crew members are Brandon Jackson and Kolt Schnake.
