Automotive Program Puts Hot Rod to the Test

Phillips, CCC Columbus Automotive Instructor and students took the Hot Rod to PSU on March 26 to put it on a dynamometer to see what she is made off. A dynamometer or "dyno" for short, is a device for  measuring force, torque, or power. The results? The  Bronze beauty is putting out 366 horsepower to the rear wheels which  means the engine is producing approximately 460 horses. She was also graphed at 501 ft lbs of torque. She did the simulated quarter mile in 13.1  seconds at 96 miles per hour.

Phillips stated, "Our expectations were 400 horsepower to the wheels which means the engine would be producing 500  horses and 550 torque with a quarter mile time of 12.5.  "We are  close, and I believe with a little more tuning this baby might put out  more than we expected. It was a lot of fun and we can't wait to go back after she's tuned some more."
